Alan Menter, MD

Alan Menter completed a medical degree at the Medical School of the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. His postdoctoral training included a dermatology residency at Pretoria General Hospital at the University of Pretoria, also in South Africa, and fellowships at Guys Hospital, St. John’s Hospital for Diseases of the Skin in London, UK, and at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He currently serves as Director of the Baylor Research Center, as well as Director of the Dermatology Residency program and Chairman of the Division of Dermatology at Baylor University Medical Center. Dr. Menter is also Chair of Research for Dermatology at Baylor Research Institute, and Program Director, Dermatology Residency Program, Baylor University Medical Center, as well as Clinical Professor of Dermatology at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.

Board certified by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), Dr. Menter holds key positions with several professional organizations. He is a founding member of the Annenberg Circle Dermatology Foundation, Research Leadership; and a member of the Community Practitioner Advisory Board for Resident Trainees at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Menter founded and serves as President of the International Psoriasis Council, an international organization dedicated to raising awareness of psoriasis as a serious autoimmune disease that has major quality-of-life implications. Additionally, Dr. Menter is Past President of the Texas Dermatological Society, Dallas Dermatological Society and the Dermatological Therapy Association, he served as Clinical Director of the National Psoriasis Foundation Tissue Bank from 1996 to 2002, and he was a member of the AAD Board of Directors from 1995 to 1997 and the editorial board of the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology (1998-2004).

Dr. Menter has authored 252 articles, 4 books, and multiple book chapters. He is a member of the editorial boards of Clinical and Experimental Dermatology, Practical Dermatology, Journal of Dermatology for Physician Assistants, Journal of Clinical Dermatology, Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, and PsoriasisNet. Dr.Menter was coauthor of the first gene discovery for psoriasis, published in Science in 1994. His research has covered a range of areas, including ultraviolet phototherapy, biologic therapy, and mapping of genetic patterns of susceptibility in psoriasis. His broad clinical practice currently includes over 1,300 patients on systemic and biologic therapy.
