Addressing Cardiovascular Comorbidities in Psoriasis Patients
Release date: October 2009
Expiration date: October 31, 2010
Estimated time to complete activity: 1 hour
No longer available for CME credit
Co-provided by Curatio CME Institute and Dermatology Nurses' Association
Support for this activity has been provided through educational grants from Amgen and Genentech.
Activity Overview
The systemic inflammatory nature of psoriasis and its association with cardiovascular comorbidities are important considerations for the management of patients with psoriasis. Moreover, the recognition that younger patients with more severe disease are at increased risk for poor cardiovascular outcomes warrants early detection of patients who are most at risk for cardiovascular disease. This Biologic Bulletin examines the risk for cardiovascular disease in patients with psoriasis, the mechanisms that contribute to cardiovascular comorbidites, and the effect that psoriasis treatment has on cardiovascular outcomes.
Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of dermatologists, dermatology residents and fellows, dermatology nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who manage patients with moderate to severe psoriasis.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Recognize the clinical effect of psoriasis on the development of cardiovascular comorbidities
- Describe mechanisms of endothelial damage and increased cardiovascular risk in patients with psoriasis
- Identify patients with psoriasis who may be at greatest risk for developing cardiovascular comorbidities
- Evaluate evidence regarding biologic agents and cardiovascular risk
