Summary

The safety and efficacy of biologic agents for the treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis was the subject of much discussion at a recent national meeting in New Orleans. Of particular interest were presentations of data concerning the long-term safety and efficacy of efalizumab during 36 months of continuous use, the clinical improvements achieved with multiple courses of alefacept, and the safety (at the 3-month time point) of etanercept in an ongoing 2-year study. In addition, safety and efficacy data were presented for infliximab and adalimumab, two biologic agents that have not yet been approved for psoriasis. These recent reports clearly demonstrate the potential of the biologic agents to provide ongoing control of moderate to severe psoriasis.
