Strategies for Optimizing Management of Difficult-to-Treat Psoriasis

Release date: September 2008
Expiration date: September 30, 2009

Estimated time to complete activity: 45 minutes

Sponsored by Curatio CME Institute

Support for this activity has been provided through an educational grant from Genentech, Inc.

Activity Overview
A 45-year-old male patient with a 15-year history of recalcitrant psoriasis presents to your virtual office, and you—in consultation with Jeffrey M. Weinberg, MD, of St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center and Beth Israel Medical Center in New York—are providing his care. Among the issues that arise over the course of this case are the safety and efficacy of combination therapy with biologics (eg, etanercept, efalizumab) and traditional systemic therapy agents (eg, methotrexate), monitoring for such adverse events as thrombocytopenia and hemolytic anemia, and the management of transient mild breakthrough and generalized inflammatory flare. This activity follows the progression of this case over several months, solicits your clinical input on key aspects of the case, and presents treatment recommendations provided from other clinicians who have “consulted” on this case.

Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of dermatologists, dermatology residents and fellows, and other health care professionals involved in the care of patients with psoriasis.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe issues that result in difficult-to-treat cases
  • Discuss treatment strategies, such as combination therapy and transitioning agents
  • Evaluate how clinical data impacts daily dermatology practice
