CME/CE Programs : Managing the Psoriasis Patient With Concomitant Disease
Managing the Psoriasis Patient With Concomitant Disease
Release date: October 2009
Expiration date: October 31, 2010

Estimated time to complete activity: 30 minutes

Co-provided by Curatio CME Institute and The Dermatology Nurses’ Association

Support for this activity has been provided through educational grants from Amgen and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and Centocor Ortho Biotech.

Activity Overview
A 62-year-old male patient presents to your virtual office with severe psoriasis. Among the issues that you need to consider are this patient’s previous history of renal cell carcinoma, active hepatitis C, and alcoholism. You—in consultation with Jeffrey Crowley, MD and Melodie Young, MSN, RN, A/GNP-C—are managing his care. "Consult" with Dr. Crowley and your colleagues as you consider treatment options for this complex case. This activity follows the progression of the case, solicits your clinical input on key aspects of treatment, and presents recommendations provided by other clinicians that have "consulted" on this case.

Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of dermatologists, dermatology residents and fellows, dermatology nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other health care professionals involved in the care of patients with moderate to severe psoriasis.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Assess the efficacy, long-term safety, and recommended monitoring associated with traditional and biologic systemic agents for the treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis
  • Develop treatment strategies for difficult-to-manage cases of psoriasis, including combination systemic therapy, transitioning to biologic agents, and transitioning between biologic agents
  • Evaluate risks, benefits, and contraindications for medications to treat moderate to severe psoriasis, taking into consideration complex patient characteristics such as concomitant disease
